Thoughts/Contact Me

I live in Santa Rosa, California. I photograph the natural and human landscape. I employ traditional approaches, working with black & white film and silver gelatin darkroom prints.

I am attracted to the narrative essence of photography. A photograph interprets a moment in time and space. On a microscopic level, the reaction of light sensitive emulsion is remarkable. Randomly and evenly dispersed silver halide molecules react to light or remain dormant, creating an image. Projected through a lens, reflections of radiant energy create a picture.

Both camera and darkroom time bring joy and contentment to my live. Traveling with a camera is an opportunity to explore nature and humanity. The darkroom is a sanctuary with a unique blend of red light, liquids, smells, and music.

I have been taking photos since childhood. My first camera was a 'Brownie' box type with exploding flash bulbs. My appreciation for photography started with pouring over my grandmother's family albums for hours with my sisters. I appreciate my family's longstanding support, with my parents allowing me to paint their bathroom black for my first darkroom, and my wife and children waiting patiently while I photographed scenes.

I use medium and large format cameras, varying from 2.25x2.5 to 4x5" negatives. Medium format allows me to work with fluidity in environments full of wind and movement, whereas large format demands contemplation and stillness.

Given care, a black & white photograph should last for generations. I print on fiber based silver gelatin photographic paper, processed according to current archival standards. Prints are toned in selenium to enhance tonal value and for preservation. Each photograph is mounted on museum-quality rag mat board with an overlaid signed mat and an acid-free back.

Thank you for the privilege of sharing my images and thoughts with you.
